Maryland Awards $500,000 for Lucas Village Redevelopment
Maryland DHCD awards $500,000 through the State Revitalization Programs to fund demolition and prepare for new affordable housing.
The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) announced today that the Housing Authority of the City of Frederick (HACF) has received $500,000 through the state's State Revitalization Programs. The funds are designated for the demolition of Lucas Village, a public housing community with documented health and safety concerns, and for site preparation ahead of constructing new affordable housing.
The award is part of a larger $12.6 million package supporting 34 community development projects across the Metro Washington region.
What This Means
This state funding represents a critical piece of the financial puzzle for the Lucas Village redevelopment. Combined with federal support through HUD's Section 18 program, the project now has the resources to move from planning into action.
The existing 92-unit complex - built in 1972 and originally known as Sagner - has faced persistent challenges including sinkhole risks from the area's karst limestone geology and flooding in the low-lying site. These safety concerns prompted HUD to approve the demolition application.
Looking Ahead
HACF will use these funds alongside other local and federal resources to demolish the aging structures and prepare the 7.28-acre site for a modern, safe, and sustainable community.
